Data as a catalyst to change in science and in society

by Tero Huhtala, Oulu Business School, University of Oulu Originally published in https://www.oulu.fi/thinktank/node/56934 We live in an increasingly data-driven world, where business decisions are based on customer relationship management databases and big data, and where much of the global population use the internet daily. Every action we take in the internet produces data, whether it is uploading a video to Youtube, or browsing an online webshop. Over 2.5 quintillion bytes of data are created each day at current rate, and that rate is only going to increase exponentially. Indeed, over 90% of all the data in the world was generated in the last two years.  Some researchers claim we have already entered a new phase of society, characterized by a plethora of labels and concepts - information society, post-industrial society, network society and many more - that have been debated over for decades (Bell, 1972; Beniger, 1986; Castells, 1996). Using personal data to advance service

Data are increasingly important for all organizations and individual people. I have just published my paper identifying seven key resources for integrating personal data by specifically addressing resource integration in the preventive healthcare domain. If you are interested in reading the whole paper, here is the link: https://rdcu.be/3X7C .  # healthcare # personaldata # resource # data # research

Some companies, like Facebook and Google, arguably base their whole business logic on the exploitation of personal data. This harvested data is generally regarded as a source of competitive advantage, meaning that most personal data generated today is confined to ...

How integrated data can make me into a Super-Dad

There is a massive amount of data on each and every one of us scattered in cyberspace. Integrating this data in a meaningful way could result in a better and healthier YOU. I’m a dad. I love to play with my son. There’s just no substitute for it: the little eyes filled with the wonder of the world, fart sounds being a source of immeasurable joy. Sometimes, though, after a long day at work, I just don’t have the energy or focus to play with the little rascal. It pains me to see the disappointment in the little guy’s eyes when he realizes I won’t crawl under the kitchen table with him. Wait, why do I get tired after work? I don’t get tired after eight hours on a day off, even if I’m out and about all day. So it must have something to do with the activities – or the lack thereof – during the workday. Caffeine, food, stress – all of these things matter. There are so many kinds of activity trackers and other gizmos that it’s hard to keep up, but they all basicall...
